Oatlands Properties
Oatlands is a peaceful, pretty colonial township just off the Midlands Highway (A1), about 84km north of Hobart. The town has more Georgian and early colonial buildings than any other town in Australia.
We have it all - Tassie's top accommodation, the best doctors in the state, Dr Robert Simpson and Dr Meryl Gray, Ph: 03 62 545030 and a hospital open all hours. We have a chemist, library, post office, two banks, a large supermarket, a take-away, a service station, a draper and a newsagent. The Stables does a light meal. There are two pubs, and we have 2 coffee shops & a restaurant attached to the RSL Club that I would recommend. There are 3 antique shops and the Central Tasmanian Tourism Centre also has a wonderful selection of Tasmanian crafts for sale. Casaveen has locally grown wool knitted into many different woollen garments etc. They have tours through the knitting factory and a wonderful cafe attached. There are 3 more shops specialising in local arts and crafts. We have an R.S.L Club, Rotary, bowls, golf, football and a swimming pool. There are three churches; Catholic, Church of England and Uniting Church. All welcome visitors.
The district is a rural area and Oatlands is a small village with the greatest attraction being the number of colonial buildings in the vicinity. One of the buildings has just completed renovations and is now a working Wind Mill grinding wheat to be sold and used in the local, now famous, Companion Bakery, recently featured on the ABC’s Po’s Kitchen and the Gourmet Farmer on SBS Television. The Callington Mill forms a magic back ground for this quaint village. The Visitor Information Centre and Coffee Shop are appropriately located in the Callington Mill precinct. The back ground to the mill is Lake Dulverton which is again proudly displaying lots of water and wild life, after years of drought.
Oatlands boasts the greatest number of Georgian buildings in the nation! The highlight is the Callington Mill Complex. We are situated in the heart of Tasmania, so from here you are able to see most of the state. One hour gets you to Launceston, Hobart and the East Coast and Central Highlands. Of course, closer to home there is a nice drive to Interlaken, then either down to Bothwell or Tunbridge, Ross and back to your cottage. Interlaken is one of the best fishing areas in the state. Licences and fishing tackle can be purchased at Mancey's Shop is Oatlands.
